Your Guide to Dressing Akin to Emily in Paris

As you all must be well aware, the second season of Netflix’s Emily in Paris premieres on 22 December as really the best Christmas gift any of us can ask for. Darren Star’s other show, Sex and the City, is constantly praised for its fashion (I mean, we are about to have a whole brunch themed around it). But too often our favourite American expat is cast aside. I think I can safely say that everyone who watched the show was left with the same question: how can I dress more like Emily?

In a homage to 2020’s finest piece of television, let’s take a look at how you can bring some of Emily’s best and brightest looks to St Andrews.

Look 1 — Emily in Beret

This is my personal favourite of Emily’s looks. The bold tartan blazer is perfect for your autumn wardrobe, while the correspodning bright red beret acts as perhaps a not-so-subtle reminder that Emily is, well, in Paris. A red beret can be procured from any respectable retailer, and while her blazer is currently sold out, for obvious reasons, on Farfetch (I’d recommend turning on email alerts), you can, in the meantime, make do with a dupe. And do make sure to pair it with your favourite Chanel bag!

Look 2 — Emily in . . . Paris

Emily takes pity on the less observant who may not have realised that beret = Paris with this Eiffel Tower print shirt. The faux snake-skin skirt sexes up the already sexy look. But also remember that colour is your friend and that the best outfits incorporate the whole rainbow. To get this look, repurpose an old shirt by painting the cathedral on it and then go and stand in front of the cathedral.

Look 3 — Emily in Green

At the peak of her rise to influencer status, Emily begins to experiment with colour-blocking. This particularly iconic look explains why green was one of 2021’s most popular colours. Emily makes a return to tartan and headgear with this stylish bucket hat that is perfect for your next festival; it’s never too early to start planning. To achieve this look, pull all the green clothes out of your wardrobe and put them on. Don’t worry about the shades matching — Emily wouldn’t.

And if you don’t own enough green, Ralph Lauren can help you out with this handsome bucket hat.

Look 4 — Emily in Everything

If green isn’t your thing, this red hat might be up your alley. Emily daringly combines a lace undershirt and a sports-inspired garm, reminding us not to limit ourselves — you can do anything! The layering makes it perfect for the transition from autumn to winter; both the hat and high neckline will keep you warm. To achieve this look, get creative and combine two aesthetics. And if you’ve got any vintage lace curtains at home, try fashioning them into a shirt.

Special Mention

Every Emily in Paris aspirer needs her own Eiffel Tower bag charm. So why not take it further and make it the whole bag — before you know it, all the boys will be calling you ringarde.

In short, stock up on your tartan and Paris branding. Or for a personal feel, keep it local and visit the Union shop for some St Andrews-branded merch to wear with your Chanel and quirky hats. However, there’s unfortunately no tartan headwear available so I’d settle for one of the tartan scarves and this charming hoodie I could imagine Emily herself in. All you have to do is follow these tips, and you’ll soon be raking in the Insta followers.
