Street Style

What’s up and coming for St Andrews

Three weeks into the start of the new school year, we parked ourselves on a bench outside our favorite St Andrews coffee shop to poll new and returning students about the street style trends of our beloved town. All to give you the following guide for inspiration in dressing with what’s up and coming this fall semester.

First things first, we are a strong believer in wearing whatever you want; express yourself loudly or subtly in everything you decide to do. What we can all agree on though is the need for a trusty coat and an even more trusty pair of shoes. Trending in St Andrews now and always is the classic variation on a white sneaker. Retro looking shoes have made a comeback as well with the black bowler looking Adidas superstars and Nike 550s. Honorable mention for clogs and loafers.

The versatility of your clothing in Scotland is a necessity for our fickle and unpredictable weather. Thus the need for layers is born. Some say the barbour jackets are going out of style while blazers are on the up and up, but we’ll let you be the judge of that. We saw plenty of staple coats but here are some of the coats that yielded both function and heaps of personality.

Everyone knows about color coordination in an outfit, but what about tonality? This fall we’re hoping to see all the shades in our outfits. For Una that meant shades of brown and muddy greens but for Kate it was warm tones reflected in her jewelry as well.

Going back to basics, a dependable all black or canadian tuxedo is equally as appealing.

Most importantly, we’re living in the age of the fashion comeback. We saw the y2k, but people have been venturing into dressing for other themes like the “victorian age and historical trends”. Spurred by all the rage about thrifting over the past few years, people’s closets hold more and more second hand clothing. The challenge to style these pieces has resulted in taking things meant for other activities and turning them into statement pieces or the greatest accessories. For example, Shannon’s self proclaimed ‘baseball socks’ pair with a nearly totally thrifted outfit that is eccentric but cohesive in a new form.

Last but certainly not least, accessories. It’s all in the details. Rings, self curated necklace stacks, bracelets, watches, buttons: anything can make an outfit. We’ve seen plenty of both minimalist or maximalist assecorizors and both are brilliant.
