Goodbye Paris Fashion Week, Hello St Andrews Reading Week
LISBON: WARM CITY, COOL OUTFITS
Lisbon, a city that has something for everyone. These girls definitely represented St. Andrews best dressed by pulling out all the stops day and night.
Embracing the warm and sunny weather, Nancy, Annabella, and Mabel opted for the classic linen bottoms and baby tees. Opting for a warmer top or bottom piece, such as pants and a tank top or a sweater and shorts, embraces the beautiful Lisbon weather that one cannot beat. Embodying the traveling abroad lifestyle, these girls understood the cool, chilled-out fashion of roaming the streets of Lisbon during the day but pulling out all the stops in their LBDs for a night out in the city.
The classic balcony photo before a night out never fails, and Sabrina and Mabel nailed the assignment. Low-back LBDs and statement jewelry are a classic going-out look that never fails, especially in a city like Lisbon. One of the best parts of a night out is getting ready with your girlfriends and dressing up, and Sabrina and Mabel definitely showcase this in this iconic balcony photo. If you’re ever in Lisbon, these are definitely the girls to take inspo from for your outfits.
BERLIN: WHERE BLACK PIECES ARE MORE THAN A STAPLE
Recognize these faces? Your beloved EIC, Jacqueline, and I took a trip to a city different from Lisbon in every way possible. We traveled to a chillier and less colorful location (minus my outfit), where we immersed ourselves in the culture and history by day and became techno lovers by night. In the Berlin style, our outfits often opted for darker color schemes and ‘grungier’ styles, such as oversized leather jackets and platform Doc Martens.
When it came to the nightlife, the music and scene were a bit different from our favorite 601 in St. Andrews, which meant we had to temporarily retire our favorite going-out jeans and tops, which we had no problem with. We took this opportunity, as most girls do when traveling, to dress up and don our favorite skirts and dresses. Darker colors and statement makeup were all the rave whilst we were here, as demonstrated by the navy blue dress and leather coats, and statement lipstick fabulously worn by Jacqueline.
Just because Berlin has that grunge, dark aesthetic does not mean that we shied away from wearing our favorite colorful pieces. We found a perfect middle ground between embracing our own styles and the Berlin aesthetic, as seen through my light-wash jeans and burgundy purse combined with a leather jacket. Jacqueline let her style shine through with her classic red Gazelles and baggy jeans, with some Berlin elements like her black and silver Zadig purse and oversized black coat. Sophia followed suit with her white sneakers and flared jeans combined with also a leather jacket. Wir lieben Berlin!
STOCKHOLM: ULTIMATE ‘SCANDI GIRL’ CORE
Who hasn’t seen ‘Scandi Girl’ fashion on their social media? From low-waisted flared jeans to fluffy jackets, Victoria nailed Scandinavian style while in Stockholm. Most definitely a colder city to visit and with a very different style than the other ones in this article, Victoria continued to prove that St. Andrews students bring fashion no matter where they go. Staying warm with a fluffy coat, a Scandinavian girl essential, and rocking flared jeans, fitting into the city was a ‘walk in the park.’
Despite Stockholm's normally cold temperatures, October was the perfect time to rock a mixture of winter and fall Scandinavian styles. Victoria donned a miniature trench coat with some grey-heeled sneakers, combining her own personal style with the classics of Stockholm style. Unlike the colors of Lisbon and dark tones of Berlin, Stockholm's color scheme is a middle ground of neutrals and cool colors, such as beige and white, and adding pops of silver or gold through jewelry or funky sneakers. The classic waist-length shirt with an oversized pullover and baggy jeans outfit that every Stockholm girl wears was reverbed by Victoria with a denim mini skirt and sweater folded over her shoulders.
When it comes to nightlife, Stockholm's style does not disappear, unlike other cities where LBDs and short dresses are the go-to. Shops like Pull & Bear and Monki become packed on a Friday afternoon, with everyone stopping by to grab their newest going-out tops, which are similar to the one Victoria is wearing in her mirror selfie. Vests and folded-over bandeau tops with a pair of low-waisted jeans or trousers are essentially the going-out uniform in Stockholm, which represents the cool and laid-back vibes of the people in the city.
STOCKHOLM PART 2: STREET STYLE IS THE MOVE
Cool-girl Sophia took a bit of a different approach when visiting Stockholm, choosing more street-style and embracing her NYC vibes instead of the classic Scandinavian style. Her and her friend can be seen repping their best outwear in order to stay warm against the Stockholm weather, but still be the best dressed on the streets. The fur-hood demonstrates the shift from last years minimalist winter vibes to this year where fur coats and maximalist boots are going to be all the rave.
Some of the classic Scandinavian style was represented by Sophia with this adorable floral pink blouse, while sipping on a coffee – who doesn’t love a good coffee shop moment on a reading week trip. The half-up half-down hairstyle adds a soft element to this outfit, contrasting the more grunge and street-wear style outfits her and her friends were seen wearing in the first outfit. These different outfits demonstrate that although a city may have an associated style, you can always take elements of it an incorporate them into your own personal style.
