House of Gucci: An Outfit Review

Since its deliciously opulent promo photos first graced us back in April, you’d be hard-pushed to find someone who hasn’t heard of Ridley Scott’s latest film production, House of Gucci.

Lady Gaga portrays the infamous, real-life Patrizia Reggiano, the woman who married the grandson of the founder of Gucci.

Popularly known as ‘Lady Gucci’, she gained notoriety for her luxurious lifestyle, having been said to spend £8,000 a month on orchids alone. Her famous line, ‘Better to cry in a Rolls Royce than be happy on a bicycle’ perhaps best explains her legendary status.

After the breakdown of her marriage, the title Lady Gucci gave way to ‘Black Widow’ when she hired a hitman to murder her husband. Relatable, right?

With Gaga on board, and Adam Driver’s famous Arran jumper attracting huge media attention, the fashion expectations for this film were incredibly high. Delve below to find out how they fared, and even glean some inspiration for yourself.

Demure in Burberry

Whilst this outfit might scream . . . dowdy after everything you’ve heard about Patrizia, acclaimed costume designer Janty Yates claims this selection shows the character’s initial naivety. And though it’s more Celine-esque than Gucci, the gorgeous Burberry Check trench and 50s headscarf offer a chic moment of respite, though it is a tad dull. Don a similar headscarf like this one and hit the streets of St Andrews.

The gorgeous neckline on this number is what Gaga-as-Patrizia wears when meeting her future husband and reflects her sexy charm. Yates has revealed it took over two months to create, with plenty of fittings.

Skip the two months of tailoring; Reformation has you sorted with this more convenient dress. The vibrancy, shoulder details, and satiny finish mimic Gaga’s, making it the perfect festive piece.

The Viral Outfits

The epic story of love, greed, and murder was first introduced to us with this photo, sending the media into a frenzy. Personally, I love a chap with a good quality jumper and this gorgeous one is no exception, especially when paired with retro glasses.

The fur sable pouf perfectly framing Gaga’s icy glare also works extremely well, along with the heavy jewellery that makes this look the ultimate power pose. Does it deserve its viral status? Absolutely.

Legend has it some similar Arran knits have been spotted in our very own charity shops in town, though they can be found here too in case they’ve all been snatched up.

And, if you’re not prepared to kill a sheep to recreate Gaga’s pouf, take a look here.

La Lollo 2.0

Gina Lollobrigida, Italy’s favourite film star, is the main credit for this gorgeous white dress. The intricate lace is a faithful homage to the original worn, with the gorgeous pearl earrings a particularly Patrizia addition.

If you want ones from the House itself then search no further.

And more affordable ones can be snatched up here.

So bad, it’s good . . . ?

You can’t help but love the slightly pathetic but quirky Aldo Gucci, and Yates hamps up the camp energy with his outfits. I honestly have no advice for recreating this look. Go for colour, go for patterns, and perhaps sacrifice some taste.

Overall, the outfits of Aldo Gucci are successful in challenging Gaga/Patrizia’s fashion domination, with their hideous resplendence somewhat reminiscent of Sebastien Flyte. Full marks all around.
