Letter from the Editor | Spring 2021
Our director Cait had asked me to do a letter for the start of the semester back in January, but I honestly just couldn’t bring myself to write one. It seemed as though nothing had changed since my last update in December; in fact, things had really only gotten worse, and there seemed less to look forward to than ever with so many people unable to return to St Andrews and the possibility of doing anything at all in spring break slowly sunk away. I put off that letter until now, just before that break, with the hope that things would at least be a little better. And for a brief moment, it seemed they would be, up until this latest outbreak of cases.
But my hope is still that this will all blow over, because, you know what, it’s spring again, a season in St Andrews so many of us lost last year, one that means the sun showing itself more, the days growing astoundingly longer, and life being breathed back into the landscape. It means no more tights under pants, donning less layers, and maybe even bearing your legs on a particularly balmy day. It may, even this year, mean May Dip and beach bonfires and perhaps even a garden party or two.
Here at CC, our executive committee is looking to the end of lockdown by breaking out of our quarantine routines over this break and pushing ourselves to do something out of the ordinary, whatever that may look like. Our entire team is looking forward to in-person shoots hopefully happening again soon, as well as the new inspiration that will accompany them, but, in the meantime, we’re still creating some special content related to some favourite annual spring events, and, as ever, we’ll have regular articles going up here on the blog all the way through May.
Spring in St Andrews means looser pants and short-sleeves, heading down to the beach with a big blanket, standing in sunglasses outside Taste, and only getting up the motivation to cook dinner at nine at night when the sun finally starts to set. There’s a whole horrible year behind us, yes, but it is, finally, behind us — and at this point, things only really can get better, just as the days grow longer and the sun gets warmer.
