The Art of Mixing Metals

Wearing different metals may have once seemed like a potential fashion faux pas, intimidating people to stay with the same tone pieces. However, with the new emphasis put on jewellery stacks, the new trends are all shaped around unique pieces that somehow work together harmoniously. This modern approach towards accessorising has enabled individuals to channel their creativity, whilst adding another “layer” to their outfits. No matter the variation of metals, combining materials is a simple way to add complexity to an otherwise simple outfit.

Though there may be a maximalist connotation when it comes to mixing metals, it doesn’t always have to be that way. You can tailor shapes and sizes to go for a more minimalistic look. It all comes down to personal preference and choices. Whether it is dainty chains stacked together or thick iconographic necklaces, mixing metals is for anyone.

One of the most important yet fun parts of mixing metals is to choose individual pieces of jewellery to add to the combination. Whether it is a family heirloom you want to add to your stack or just a simple necklace, asking another metal to your daily rotation will pull outfits together, whilst making you feel chic. Moreover, some simple ways to get into mixing metals are layered necklaces, bangles, multicoloured charm bracelets, and rings. Timeless classics like David Yurman, Tiffany & Co, and Cartier can be the perfect investment to start your mixed metal journey. Or you can find pieces at Pandora and Mejuri to use as the keystone item to start a stack. Sometimes the perfect mixed metal item can be found in the most surprising of places. Whether it is your mum’s drawer or the corner of a charity shop, stay on the lookout!

Another way to add an element of mixed metal into your looks is to go with a dual tone watch. Going off high-endexamples that have increased in popularity this year, mixed metal watches like the Cartier Tank, Panthère or the Rolex Datejust, can create a harmonious finish that pulls together the rest of your look.

If you wish to keep the metals as separate items, layering silver and gold chain necklaces together can be an option. Moreover, if you have several ear piercings, multi-metal earrings and studs can be the perfect opportunity to get into mixing metals. Finally, if you have different pieces of jewellery that you just can’t pick between, it is a brilliant opportunity to wear them all at once.

If you want to nail the game of mixing metals, there are some tips you can keep in mind:

1) Let the metals interact with each other for a more harmonious look. Although the first though that comes to mind can be to keep the different tones of metals separate from each other, almost like a comfort blanket whilst styling. Although it is recommended to let the different hues interact and blend with each other for a more put together look.

2) Choose pieces that have similar stylistic types: using pieces of jewellery that are reminiscent of each other based on shape will create a stable base to add the variation of colour. This base can be rounded or geometric, differing in size or so on. Keeping these items close together enables to create an overall harmony.

3) Find a balance and play with the weight of the items. When choosing jewellery, it is important to add an aspect of diversity to the stack. To create a more intricate look, try going for items that differ in weight. Like a chunky gold band next to intricate rose gold eternity rings, or chains that go from weighty to the daintiest. If you want to focus on earrings, going for a multi-toned huggie or a single metal hoop can be the perfect companion to a sculptural stud. It adds a layer of creativity whilst making it look like you have spent time planning it.

Take this as a sign to be more adventurous with your daily stacks, whether it is a passed down and well-loved set of bangles, or a new bright item in your closet, it can be the perfect finish touch to level up your stylistic game.
