Cozy Clothes

Is athleisure going to become popular in St Andrews? Probably not. But, the cozy comfortable winter style is definitely gaining traction not only online but around town and showcasing the ⅔ rule can be a great way to make wearing more comfortable styles popular as it offers a sense of cohesion.

Seventeen describes clean girl aesthetic as:

“glowy skin, a pinch of blush, glossy lips, slicked-back hair, gold hoops, tote bags, and a slim pair of sunnies”.

This look was popularized by Hailey Bieber although the trend has roots in the style of the 90s and early 2000s. This is a very minimalistic look that emphasizes a ‘less is more’ approach and embodies a very “I woke up like this” vibe that creates a cohesive look without trying too hard. Concerning makeup, liquid is the preference over powder as it's meant to just blend in and accentuate natural features while leaving a dewy finish. Hair wise, a slick back is popular as it has that clean look, but I think letting your hair down to frame your face also embodies this trend as it embraces one's natural beauty! For clothes, the incredibly popular Scandinavian style is in and it sports knits, lots of fluff and most importantly uggs! Another style that complements clean girl aesthetic is ‘ballet core’ that has also gained traction recently with leg warmers, cozy socks, and tights. During finals season, more and more people sport the athleisure look, namely flare leggings. The key to this style being spotted around St Andrews would be finding a stylish way to mesh the comfy cozy pieces with accessories that make it more of an ‘outfit’ like the ⅔ rule.

The ⅔ rule is one that I follow religiously of which the three categories are hair, makeup, and outfit. When ⅔ of these are done, you look completely put together without the trouble of going all out. My new thing is not wearing makeup during the day so having a great outfit and fantastic hair is imperative. In the context of comfy clothes, since most believe that leggings are too casual and undone, there are many ways to dress them up, one of these being both hair and makeup done. A personal favorite of mine (American biased) is the Aritzia one piece flare cut with my Ralph Lauren American flag sweater, uggs or a cute pair of sneakers and of course lots of jewelry.

Athleisure has the potential to make a huge comeback in the fashion scene in St Andrews. Due to the popularity of clean girl aesthetic and ballet core, using the ⅔ rule and adding personal touches like jewelry and other accessories means it’s not outlandish to think that this could become a real trend here.
